ISU Plays the Waiting Game

Local Sports

After a 20-point loss in the Missouri Valley Tournament final, Illinois State (27-6) must wait all week to learn its postseason fate.

The Redbirds lost one regular season conference game, but ISU is one of a handful of teams “on the bubble.” However, most bubble teams have conference tournaments this week, with opportunities to pick up a few more wins and impress the selection committee. All the Redbirds can do is wait and hope.

“If they go based on one game they saw – they probably don’t watch as many games of ours as they watch other teams – but hopefully they’ll look at the full body of work we have,” Head Coach Dan Muller said. “Obviously, we want to be in.”

Following Sunday’s loss, the Redbirds made it clear they feel deserving of an at-large berth.

“Our defensive field goal percentage is top-3, top-4 in the country, so if they’re looking at that, they can tell we compete with the best of them,” senior Deontae Hawkins said. “So that’s what they should be looking at.”

The NCAA Tournament Selection Show will air Sunday at 5 pm on WMBD.
