This week, thousands of people have come to central Illinois to see some of the best disc golf in the country.
The Ledgestone Insurance Open made its way to Eureka Lake for its 5th year there. Players and tournament leaders say this is one of the best disc golf events on the planet.
We have almost 1,000 players. We have thousands of spectators that come throughout the week. It’s the second biggest disc golf tournament in the world. It’s a million dollars of economic impact to the Peoria area.”Nate Heinold | Ledgestone Insurance Open Tournament Director
Heinold says the Lake Eureka course presents plenty of challenges for the athletes, and that’s why the best play here.
Disc golf tournaments happen all over the region. Media event coordinator Terry Miller says Central Illinois is the perfect place for a high caliber tournament.
“The Midwest is known for disc golf, and so when you’re in Central Illinois, you know you’re gonna have good disc golf, and good people,” Miller said.
And for some athletes the hard work really does pay off.
“This has become a stop that everyone wants to make sure that they hit. Not only does it challenge them, but there’s some pretty serious payout on the line,” Miller said.
“This is the richest stop of the year for them. They’re playing for a lot of money. Top prize for this event is $4,500 this year for the men,” Heinold said.
