The past 24 hours has been a blur to Luke Mangieri.
The former Dunlap High School and Bradley University star was selected by Pittsburgh in the 25th round of the Major League Baseball draft Wednesday.
It was hard for him to celebrate. The slugging first baseman was in the dugout with his Northwoods League team in Wisconsin when he heard the news the Pirates drafted him.
Even after a night’s rest, it’s hard for him to believe it.
“Honestly, I’m just in shock at everything that happened. It doesn’t feel real,” said Mangieri on Thursday. “You dream of this moment your whole life and then it happens. It’s a surreal feeling. Every little baseball player’s ream is to play professional baseball. It finally happened. I’m at a loss for words.”
Magieri expects to be in Pittsburgh by the weekend to sign his first pro contract.
