No Seniors, No Problem for Illini Bluffs

GLASFORD, Ill. — The Illini Bluffs softball team figured it was still a year away.

But the Tigers are now just a win away from state.

Illini Bluffs beat Lewistown 5-3 Thursday for a class 1A sectional title. IB, which doesn’t have a senior on its roster, can clinch a state berth with a win in Monday’s super-sectional.

“It means a lot to have no seniors and be n this position,” said junior shortstop Hanna Hicks. “We are just really proud to be here.”

Illini Bluffs will start a freshman pitcher (Kierston McCoy) and catcher (Kirsten Graham) in the super-sectional. The Tigers (22-5) will face Orangeville (26-4) at Sterling High School for the right to advance to the state finals in East Peoria.

“We thought we were still  a year away,” said Illini Bluffs coach Nancy Meyer. “So we are really happy for them, happy for the kids.”
