His team may not be predicted to be a hit this football season but Lovie Smith is one.
The new Illini coach drew a huge crowd of reporters at Big Ten media day Tuesday. The former NFL coach is being asked to turn around the University of Illinois football program, which hasn’t had a winning season since 2011.
“We know that football season is close when you have Big Ten meetings and see the coaches and players from the teams you are going to be competing with,” said smith. “There’s a lot of excitement. Training camp is right around the corner. Players are working hard. I can’t wait to transition from summer workouts right into training camp.”
Smith and the Illini open fall practice Aug. 4 in Champaign.
