Lovie Smith says he wanted to assemble an Illini coaching staff with college and NFL ties.
He introduced his first coaching staff to the media on Tuesday.
“I had a picture in mind on what exactly our staff would look like,” said Smith. “And this is it.”
Smith was hired at Illinois March 7. His top assistants are offensive coordinator Garrick McGee and defensive coordinator Hardy Nickerson, a former NFL star.
“Coach McGee has assured us and Coach Nickerson that as long as we keep teams under 39 (points), we’re going to win a lot of football games,” joked Smith. “I am really am excite about seeing our entire football team.”
Spring practice begins Friday. There is no Orange and Blue game this spring.
