Metamora, Canton Hope to Pull Upsets

Metamora and Canton hope to represent the Mid-Illini and knock off the 2-seeds in classes 5A and 4A Saturday in the IHSA football playoffs.

Metamora (7-3) hosts Highland (9-1) Saturday at 2 pm at Malone Field. Redbird seniors said Friday they feel confident going into what may be the final home game of their careers.

“Games at Old Malone are pretty big for us,” senior linebacker Gavin Eaton said. “Having a win over them would be huge.”

In Class 4A, Canton (8-2) heads south of St. Louis to play No. 2 seed Columbia (10-0). The Little Giants hope to pull off the upset and reach the quarterfinals for just the third time in school history. It would be quite a legacy for the team’s senior class.

“Knowing that it’s the last week and it could be over after one game, it really makes you step up as a senior and try to help as much as you can,” Cameron Lucas said.

Saturday’s game in Columbia kicks off at 2 pm.
