It’s not unusual to see a player wearing an apron in the Normal West dugout.
The Wildcats like to get weird.
Normal West adopted the rallying cry ‘Let’s Get Weird’ during a game against crosstown rival Normal U-High last month. the wildcats were losing late in the game when Brooklyn Bane came up with the idea.
“I came into the dugout and said, ‘OK, guys. Let’s get weird! From then on, it stuck and that’s our way to loosen up and remember the game should be fun,” said Bane, a senior.
The Wildcats rallied to win the game and a catch phrase was born.
“It shouldn’t be this tense but I never imagined there would be leprechauns would be sprouting up in the dugout and we’d be touching a pot of gold before every game,” said Bane.
Among those getting weird is senior Shannon Doherty, who dresses as in a leprechaun outfit in the West dugout.
“I just put it on, from there we decided it was lucky,” Doherty said. “Got a jig, got a pot of gold and we’re ready to go.”
Normal West’s 1-0 super-sectional win over Lincoln-way East on Monday earned the school its first trip to the state softball finals.
“I think it helps keep us calm,” said senior Ellie Sonetz. “Just being weird, we are not all tense. It’s something funny, we’re all laughing. It’s funny.”
The Wildcats play Downers Grove South in the Class 4A state semifinals at 5 p.m. Friday in East Peoria.
