The buzz that Lovie Smith has created since being hired by the University of Illinois in March has two former Richwoods players talking.
Kendrick Foster and Brandon Roberts, both heading into their junior seasons with the Illini, can’t wait to strap on the pads and play for Smith this fall.
“It’s a great addition to the Illinois program,” said Roberts, a lineman. “Everything is on the rise. You hear a lot of commotion not only around Champaign but around the state. everybody just coming around to the football team. And it’s not just the team but the whole university.”
Roberts has been practicing with the starting defensive unit this summer. He and Foster were in Peoria working a football camp.
“He’s laid back, a player’s coach. Everybody loves him, I love him,” said Foster, a running back. “(Chicago Bears defensive back) Sherrick McManis played for him and told me some things that he loves and I’m down for the ultimate goal to win the Big Ten championship.”
