Washington ‘Confident’ In Return To State

Sports

Last year they were the underdog, the unknown, the team that kept coming from behind to win.

Washington played that role perfectly and won the Class 3A state softball title. This year, the Panthers are back at state but are no longer unknown.

They have a 31-game win streak and have been ranked No. 1 all season.

“No one really knew who we were. We were going with it and we got to the state finals,” said junior Shelby Summer. “We are a little more confident this year, more calm this year.”

Washington will face Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin in the state semifinals Friday at 11 a.m.

“Last year, we kind of were the underdogs,” said junior Abigail Weisbruch. We said, ‘OK, let’s try and be the best.’ this year, we say we can do this, we definitely can.”
